after 20 years of tweaking twiddling and noodling, I found that using negative values in my tone settings gives me a much smoother tone, more of a George Lynch smooth growl than a spikey nu metal sound,

for instance this is my main distorted sound:
OD1      4.8
OD2      10
Master   8
Bass      -6
Mid      -4
Treble   -16
Pres      -2

my lead sound is the same but with OD1 on 6

of course depending on power amp and speakers it could sound radically different to mine
but does anyone else prefer to use negative values?

I use 20 patches live.  Of those, only 2 have all EQ points in the negative.  Only 2 have all EQ points all in the positive.  All others vary around zero.  None have a deviation greater than 8.

Some patches I use negative, it depends on what I'm going for.

Yeah, I use it all the time with my MP-2.
I guess many have this urge to raise EQ's in the misconception that more is better, but truth is that additive and subtractive filtering are complementary ways of achieving a combined effect.
Sometimes, or rather, often, you cannot just like with pure magic add something but instead will need to remove something else..

Hehe, I too was a prime candidate to falling victim to mainly using additive filtering (except for lowering 100hz and scooping the mids), i.e. I was trying to raise the ante, until I noticed Dante's first Fender BlackFace emulation, with the 9-band EQ going up'n'down through the whole lower midrange spectrum.

(I moved this thread to Patch Discussions)

I have been fiddling with my EQ so much lately that I'm definitely overdue to update my patch chart. I know I have some negatives in there, quite a few in fact. It depends on what color I'm looking for - and what guitar I'm using, and what FX I'm using (you get the idea). But, playing cover tunes, I have to "cover" a lot of ground and have a lot of options at my disposal.

When Harley and I were swapping patches like crazy, he gave me all kinds of ideas about my EQ settings that I had never thought of. Mostly because I was just kinda stuck in a rut & using very similar curves for most of my patches. Since then, I have experimented with cutting (or boosting) a single freq without regards to curve shape. Let your ears be your guide

FYI: I just checked my 10 most wanted patches, none go below -6. The ones that do (there are only a couple) are mainly in the midrange freqs (big surprise - NOT)
