My Guitar Rules!

« on: May 30, 2009, 05:42:50 pm »

Hey all,

I got my 3TM with the MDRT about 2 months ago, and for the first time since I started playing 20 years ago, I am completely satified with my tone.

I recently had the opportunity to come across a 2nd 3TM, but this one was just the standard mod with no MDRT.

As a way of giving back to this board for helping me find my tone, I wanted to do my part and help others find theirs.

I don't know how to cut the video better, so you just have to manually click the video back and forth to hear the different tones side by side.

I did the first part of the video with the 3TM that does not have the MDRT.

Then I played the same licks on the 3TM with the MDRT.

All settings were EXACTLY the same on all the gear.

I'm using a custom guitar with a Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates humbucker in the bridge position into
the ADAs, into a Peavey Classic 60/60 and out to a 4 X 12 custom made cab with Celestions.

All tubes are JJ's, in the ADA and the Peavey.

I use a Boss GT-8 for reverb and a little delay and do my MIDI switching with it as well.

The audio isn't the best it could be obviously, but you can definitely hear the "body" the MDRT gives the 3TM and I am so pleased I got a great deal on mine.

Please, let me know what you guys think and I hope it helps those who can't decide if they want to get the MDRT or not.

The best way to do it is to cue up the 2nd video to where I play through the MDRT 3TM, then you can go back and forth very quickly between sounds to really hear the difference

Yes, very cool.  I've been hesitant about "wanting the MDRT" for two reasons:
1. I'm totally satisfied with my 3TM as is.  (and still am)
2. I've never had a real opportunity to somehow A/B between the two anyway.

But I'm glad someone made the time to put up a good comparison.  3TM/MDRT is good stuff, but I'll be leaving my 3TM the way it is.

awesome! thanks for posting this. i am awaiting the delivery of my mdrt now and have installed my 3tm board already so this is really adding to my excitment at the moment.

one question though. your 3tm with mdrt, is it a ultra+ (as in touched by the mighty hands of mjmp) i am curious because the standard 3tm mod vs the ultra+ with mdrt mod has alot more going on inside of it than just the mdrt. unless it was a self installed 3tm and mdrt than the only difference between your 2 units very well could just be a mdrt.

It is not an ultra+, it only has the 3TM mod, MDRT mod, and noise mod.
It was done by mjmp, though.

Wow there's a lot of difference with and without. I'm lucky to have my MP1 installed with the MDRT.
I notice that without the MDRT your MP1 is clipping and with the MDRT it's not. The sound tone is night and day difference. Definitely more groove to it.
Thousand thks to Machinator, the 1st MDRT that he posted to me get lose on the way to my home, and this good humble guy Machinator an honourable man replace it for free and delivered to my home the 2nd time. It has been two years since and the MDRT never fail me yet.  adabig

This is a very good topic for the ones that are in consideration of getting installed the MDRT. Rob (Machinator) did a really good job with this tranny to let the MP-1 work just as an amp is supposed to work.
Ekornbakke sent me his standard 3TM to get it modded/upgraded by me and I am pretty sure his smile will go all the way around when he gets it back.
What I did was first change place of the original grondwire. This wire was grounded on the chassis...I put it on the Kelvin point. Then I did an extended version of the Noise mod, raising C131 to 10.000µf, changed D38 and D39 from 1N4001 to 1N4004. I also raised C136 to 470 nf, then I changed the Zener D41 ´cuz it had a crack on it. D16 got a new 1N4004. C129+C130 got new caps. Then it was time for removing the original tranny, Ekornbakkes 3TM got a brand new heart...the infamous MDRT. After a cup of coffe I removed the U4 and soldered a socket and in with the OPA 2604. Since I was already soldering really hard and it was snowing like crazy here in the south of Norway I thought.....what the heck....I did remove the U9 and soldered a socket and replaced the U9 with a new LF412, then I removed the U8 giving Ekornbakke S.S mod which was not in my plans but I wanted him to have one extra mod to his new MP-1. In with the socket and since I was out of the NE5532 I used TL072. The last thing I did was to change the crystal to a brand new one. I fired it up......typed in my favorite settings and made sure everything was as I feel the MP-1 is suppose to work, I had to tweak some trimpots and now EKORNBAKKE.......you will be smiling all the way ´round the globe Grin

Sounds perfect!

Looking forward to bring it back to my practice office for some serious riffing! There the pimped 3TM will reunite with all the other dudes in the racks (several adas) and play together for some good times!

Really cool to have an ADAmaniac-tech in this country to have this kind of work done fast, easy and practical!

I got my super-pimped 3TM back from Mythos a couple of days ago. Completely rocks!  guitar

Had a five hour session setting patches and playing it, and I am very happy with it. The improvement was really impressive.

Probably it will go straight into my main rack, even if my stock MP-1 is really nice too. The reason is that I was able to pretty much get all the sounds of the stock MP-1, as well as the special 3TM stuff! I even got some really good low gain tube clean! Without the MDRT this was difficult and the sound got weak and a little strange. A little like turning the volume on your guitar almost all the way down, loosing the richness and sustain in the sound. But now it was a a different story  Grin
